Tabitha

Tabitha
Tabitha f
Aramaic name, meaning ‘doe’ or ‘roe’, borne in the New Testament by a woman who was restored to life by St Peter (Acts 9: 36–41). In the biblical account this form of the name is given together with its Greek equivalent, DORCAS (SEE Dorcas). It was one of the names much favoured by Puritans and Dissenters from the 17th to the 19th century, and is still occasionally used as a girl's name in the English- and German-speaking world. However, in Britain it is more commonly bestowed on cats.
Pet forms: English: Tabby (obsolete). German: Tabea (at present a fashionable name in German-speaking countries).
